A Review Project

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/

In an effort to review and summarize what has transpired in science class this fall, I am asking that each student create a piece of work that mimics one of the best magazines ever produced. Rather than use a formal exam to assess your progress in this class, I prefer this project which gives you the chance to organize your thoughts in a creative rather open-ended format. The 7 page project includes four main subdivisions, the cover, an advertisement page, a table of contents page, and four article summaries.

  1. Cover
  1. Major title (any topic we've covered including B.C. field trip)
  2. Subtopics (other topics or issues we've discussed in class)
  3. Magazine title, date, and banner (see National Geographic cover)
  4. Graphic (cover can be hand-drawn or generated on computer but must look like the cover of a Nation Geographic magazine. I have templates you can use in PageMaker.
  1. Advertisement Page
  1. Using your imagination, create an advertisement that is based on some topic we've addressed since the beginning of school. Include eye-catching graphics and snappy phrases on this page. See example that I've provided.
  1. Table of Contents Page
  1. Contains a title and summary sentence of four topics we've covered since the beginning of school. This should closely resemble the content page in National Geographic magazines. Include graphics on this page.
  1. Article Summaries (4 total, one/page)

  1. Four summaries (300-500 words) about a topic we've covered in science this fall.
  2. Include a supplemental reference citation from a text, article, or internet URL. This citation should be included on the summary page.
  3. Include a graphic or table that helps explain your article. A simple explanatory legend/caption should be typed under or near the graphic.
  4. These summaries should be typed on a word processor and checked for spelling and grammatical errors.
